On Tuesday, the Council of the European Union (#EU) appropriated a set of conclusions necessary for the future EU intellectual property policy and support the European Commission in drafting its action plan on the same.
The Council emphasizes on the significance of an efficient, strong, balanced, and transparent system of I protection and strategizes to ensure fair access and protection of innovation. Further, the Council invites the #European Commission to put forth proposals for the revision of the legal framework on the protection of industrial designs.
In the set of conclusions, important points include- to encourage the Council in providing sufficient and detailed data on piracy and counterfeit, alongside proposing measures for online providers to tackle the online sale of counterfeit goods, and calling on the commission and dispense its proposals for the revision of Community Designs Regulations and bring up with a list of issues that need to be addressed within the review.
Notably, the revision of the legal framework on industrial design protection needs to address the implications of upcoming technologies, the transit of infringing goods through the EU, and the protection of component parts of products required for repair purposes under design law.
Further, the Council addresses the need to strengthen Geographical Indications protections program in the European Union.
