Emirates District Cooling Company (Emicool), a leading district cooling service provider in the UAE and a joint venture between Dubai Investments PJSC and Actis, is a leading global investor in sustainable infrastructure.

The company has emerged as a leading district cooling service provider and has developed a real-time leak detection system using an innovative Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) technology.

Emicool said in a statement that the innovative leak detection system has enabled the company to reduce chilled water network shortfalls by 70% as compared to previous years.

As part of the Chilled Water Network Leak Detection Project, Emicool, along with European technology provider Fast GmbH is enabling early alarms of underground leakages, thereby lowering water loss.

The technology is identified as a unique concept compared to all existing leak detection systems like pressure and flow meters. The early detection of water loss enhances the plant’s operational efficiency by lowering the amount of additional chilled water required to overcome network leakages.

The Chief Executive Officer of Emicool, Dr Adib Moubadder, stated that Emicool is at an exciting crossroad of enhancing and facilitating seamless access, and integration of latest technological expertise, thus addressing the growing demand of district cooling.

Emicool is one of the early adopters of the Chilled Water Leak Detection System technology, allowing it to maintain chilled water storage. The company has the largest penetration of thermal energy storage towers, catering to almost 70 percent of cooling plants, and serves as an ideal option for energy conservation.

Moubadder further stated that the company is extremely pleased to be a part of this exciting journey to contribute and be an integral partner of the evolving district cooling industry. Emicool would continue to focus on the adoption of the state-of-the-art district cooling technologies complying with sustainable practices. The chilled water pipe network would be applied and developed in phases across all Emicool facilities to enhance the benefits of this unique technology.

The company has been conferred with its ninth consecutive IDEA District Energy Awards in two categories, namely – Number of Buildings committed and Total Building Area Committed – Beyond North America. In addition, it won the 2022 IDEA Innovation Award for Chilled Water Network Leak Detection Project.

These awards acknowledge the company’s efforts at strengthening the district cooling industry by delivering robust, efficient, and resilient systems thereby lowering reliance on conventional cooling options and curbing emissions, Moubadder added.

Emicool has strategic plans to increase the penetration of district cooling systems in the market in the years to come by transforming buildings from conventional air-conditioning to district cooling systems.

District cooling is more sustainable, green, and environmentally friendly compared to other air conditioning solutions. The company’s vision is to expand their business by becoming a world-class provider of energy-efficient district cooling. The company aims to achieve this by delivering district cooling services reliably, resourcefully and in an environmentally safe method. Emicool will deliver exceptional customer outcomes and contribute to the economic success of its partners and stakeholders.

Emicool is bestowed with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) international certifications for energy, quality and environmental management structures and is the first district cooling company from the Middle East and Africa region with the Global Conformity (GC) mark as a certified green company.
