According to publicly available information, this paid Meta Verified service will allow users to verify their accounts with their government ID and get a blue tick, all for a nominal fee

Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, announced on Sunday, Feb 19, that verified tags, or blue badges, on Facebook and Instagram could soon be paid out. This means that Meta platforms are currently testing a monthly subscription service similar to Twitter Verified called Meta Verified.

According to publicly available information, this paid Meta Verified service will allow users to verify their accounts with their government ID and get a blue tick, all for a nominal fee. According to Meta, this idea is to help content creators grow, build communities, and even avoid impersonation.

Meta Verified is an Instagram and Facebook subscription bundle that will launch later this week. The aforementioned service is available over the web starting at $11.99/month and is said to offer additional protection against identity theft as well.

Meta Verified will be launched in Australia and New Zealand this week and eventually rolled out to other countries. Even when Twitter launched its paid blue tick or Twitter Blue, it was first launched in select countries and eventually rolled out to others.

According to media reports, Mark Zuckerberg previously said the company would soon launch several products to help empower creators and boost their productivity. Many experts see the move as a new source of revenue for the companyat a time when it grapples with a global economic slowdown like other companies.

What will come to an end with this decision?

  • Blue check fraud on all meta products will cease.
  • End a multi-million dollar industry.
  • Users will no longer require a large number of PRs or connections to get authenticated.

How is it going to benefit the users at large?

  • Small creators will get more visibility.
  • Build more trust among users
  • Improved ad version with a blue review.
  • Allow small content creators to grow and excel.

Though the firm is yet to release additional information about the service, word of the new subscription service has been afoot since a few days ago. The monthly subscription service will only be available to verify profiles, not Pages. On Saturday, a screenshot of a purported policy page was shared by the Tech portal on Twitter to support the claim. It reads, “You can subscribe to Meta Verified to receive a verified badge for your profile. Note: Meta Verified is available to verify profiles only, not Pages. Notable Pages can still apply for a verified badge.”

The move comes after social media giant, Twitter, took to charging a premium under the Twitter Blue subscription, which offers a blue tick to subscribers. For Indian users, the paid service is offered against ₹650 and ₹900 per month on the website and mobile, respectively.
