The premier electronic and electrical appliance manufacturing company, Walton, has got the approval of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) for its Takyon branded E-Bikes.
Takyon will be the first ever E-Bike to legally ply on the roads of Bangladesh. With the launch and approval of Takyon E-Bike, Bangladesh, too, has now entered the era of shifting towards eco-friendly energy usage and sustainable growth.
In November 2022, BRTA approved Walton, which will brand the bikes as Takyon. It is the first company to get such approval from BRTA in Bangladesh.
Liakat Ali, the deputy managing director of Walton Digi Tech, said on this occasion that the bikes had already hit the market and the owners would be spending just 10-15 paisa (Bangladesh Taka) per kilometer.
Features of the Takyon E-Bike
Walton has come up with two models of the Takyon E-Bike. The Takyon 1.20 model sports a 1.5 KW BOSCH motor, giving it a top speed of 45 KM/h. The model has a range of 50 to 60 KM. It comes with a 48V 26Ah Lithium battery. Walton has given it a price tag of 104,900 Bangladesh taka.
The Takyon model 1.00 comes with a 1.2 KW hub motor giving it a top speed of 50 KM/h. The bike achieves a range of 60 to 70 KM. It is powered by a 72V 23Ah Graphene Lead Acid Battery. This model allows a maximum loading of 180 KG. Priced slightly higher than the previous model, buyers need to spend 127,750 Bangladesh Taka to buy this model.
The Re-emergence of the Walton Bike Division
Walton had a thriving motorcycle business in the pre-pandemic period. However, the company had to shut down this division because of the cut-throat competition. Earlier, it used to manufacture ICE-based motorbikes clocking Tk 50 billion worth of sales annually. Now, with the launch of Takyon electric bikes, Walton aims to capture the lost market share and, at the same time, play its part in promoting the adoption of environment-friendly vehicles.
Currently, 400,000 to 500,000 ICE-based bikes are sold yearly in Bangladesh. Walton aims to capture a certain portion of this market share by riding on the EV wave. Thanks to the Bangladeshi government, the registration cost for E-bikes is lesser than that of traditional bikes. This itself can give the adoption of E-bikes the necessary push. The owners of Takyon need to spend just Tk 10 for one full charge. The bikes come with portable chargers. And these bikes can be charged by owners in their own houses. Walton will be offering free after-sales service for two years to anyone buying the bike.
